Before we look too deep, we inspect the most common and simple causes for this issue. Here are some of the issues that we’ve determined lead to a refrigerator not cooling:

Is it plugged in? This may seem like a odd question, but we’ve been called out to appointments that this was the problem. For some reason, it was unplugged. it’s possible a kid unplugged it, or an electrician during a service visit. Whatever the case might be, make sure it’s plugged in.

Check the thermostat inside. This is a very common issue for those with children in their home. After all, kids are fascinated with dials and buttons and so, without understanding they’re doing something wrong, they mess with them. So, check that the thermostat setting isn’t the reason for the warm refrigerator.

Which Refrigerator Components to Troubleshoot?

Check that all of the vents inside the freezer area aren’t blocked with containers or food. This is very common since frozen veggies get stuck in the back of the freezer. There might be food in the back of a freezer unit that has long been forgotten.

Check that the condenser cooling fan is clear and clean of all debris. To check this, unplug the refrigerator and slide it out from the wall. The cooling fan for most models is just at the bottom of the appliance or somewhere in the back part of the freezer unit. Often times, homeowner do not think about cleaning this section of the appliance. But, it’s very important to keep it clean. And, it builds up with dust and fuzz quickly, especially with homes that have dogs and cats. So, grab a rag and clean the built-up dust out of the coils and fan.

This is not suggested for refrigerators that have the back coil system. Once all clean, plug it back into the wall and monitor if the fan moves.

The Freezer is Cold but the Refrigerator Isn’t

There are several causes for a refrigerator not cooling after these obvious ones to take a look at if your freezer is cold but the fridge isn’t. The evaporator coils are frosted over. This occurs because there’s a malfunction in the defrost heating system. Or when the automatic defrost experiences an issue. The evaporator fan motor can be another cause.

Every refrigerator has a set of evaporator coils. These evaporator coils are what gets cold and the fan pushes the cold air throughout the appliance. The damper control assembly is not working correctly. The temperature control board provides the electricity to the compressor and fan, this probably isn’t the problem but it’s worth mentioning.

And, the thermistor might be malfunctioning, which is a small sensor in the appliance that displays the temperature. Having one of our technicians look at it is the best course of action but these are some of the most typical issues.
